Dictionary: Variable
A variable is a symbol, usually x or y, that represents an unknown number.
x, y, z, a, b, c ...
A variable is a placeholder for a number we do not yet know. In equations we find the variable by solving the equation.
Example: In f(x) = 3x + 2, x is the variable.
